"Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach" is one of several titles in Sony's new "Music For You" Series, easily identified by their artsy, photographic covers. The material on this CD has been available previously on CBS Masterworks, and despite amazon's claim above in the title, I can find no indication in the liner notes that these digital recordings from the 1980s have been remastered. And that's not the only thing that's misleading about the title. True, Ma does play music by Bach, but it is sonatas (originally intended for viola da gamba and not cello) by Bach, and the Sinfonia Concertante by Bach's youngest son, Johann Christian Bach. Not that Sony is lying and not that most people will care or feel cheated, but since this title is obviously aimed at classical novices, I just thought I'd set the record straight. In a similar vein, hopefully those that discover both Bach and Yo-Yo Ma via this disc will like what they hear, and go on to get one of Ma's two recordings of the Bach "Cello Suites"... Read more

It's hard to describe the beauty of Boccherini's La musica notturna di Madrid, almost as if the music is more descriptive and vibrant than our language allows. The imagination, especially for the era in which this piece was written, with which he used to just 'create sound' to describe a mood or event is brilliant. The melodies in the piece lift my soul on bad days and cause me to dream of the sights and romance of the period. I would almost like to experiment how long it would take to get weary of this piece; probably a long time, however, I would never like to be weary of this piece.

In spite of the strange arguements against Herbert K's 6th, I find this to be one of the finest interpretations of the Pastoral about. Instead of the usual slow intro and gradual speeding up of the older fashioned models of this piece we have here a slick and unforced manner. Not for some, but really this is the genius of the interpretation. Richard Osborne for some reason really discounted Karajan in this movement. I think he was wrong...instead period instrument people tend to do this opening of the Pastoral at the same tempo with which Karajan pursued his arguement!

As to the 5th it is really an epic reading...no strange ritardando or even any affectation. Szell is let down by a recording that sounds monochrome in comparison to this one. The artistry of Karajan is that he tends to be lean and lithe, and he avoids excessive shaping of phrases but always has excellent rythmic playing. Never stodgy anywhere. For me, one of the keys to realizing some measure of enjoyment from Karajan's Beethoven is to accept the fact he adheres to a certain kind of style that frequently projects drama, power and majesty, yet, at times, leaves something to be desired in terms of lightness of texture and emotional suppleness. This notwithstanding, there are moments when I feel his voice more closely resembles that of Beethoven than any conductor I have heard. I find this true especially in some of the more propulsive and imposing passages of mainly the odd numbered works. Sometimes, with other composers, I have been critical of this conductor's tendency toward muscular, smoothly molded contours, however, I feel this approach melds fairly well with a decent portion of the composer's persona. I'm certainly not alone when I state that while Karajan satisfies me in some areas of Beethoven, Walter, Cluytens and Bohm, for example, fulfill me in other areas, and, indeed, in some of the same areas as well... this is a review of the much-maligned pastoral symphony is this set. most find fault with its fleet tempos but after listening to the much lauded bohm and walter, i find this is the only pastoral that doesn't put me to sleep, especially in the first movement. where with bohm you feel like it's a funeral march through the countryside, with karajan it actually feels like a joyous outing, full of sunshine, blue skies, and fresh air. it captures the sense of coming alive upon entering nature that the other recordings miss. my only gripe with this recording is that it has the karajan trademark string-laden sound. for the pastoral, i'd prefer a better balance with the winds. other than that, this is an excellent 6th. oh, the the rest of the cycle is pretty good, too!

Without doubt Sissel has a gorgeous voice and uses it with great charm. While the selections on this CD were well chosen, the technical quality of the recording leaves much to be desired. Played on a high-end system, the soundstage is very narrow and the voice is, in most tracks, off centre. More seriously,the balance between the singer and orchestra is generally not very good, with the orchestra often tending to overpower the singer. If the orchestra had been smaller and not played so loud, I suspect that Sissel would have sounded even more beautiful. The quintessential factor in a vocal CD is that the singer is always recorded so that the lyrics can be heard without being overwhelmed by the musicians. Unfortunately most tracks in this CD have been poorly balanced between soloist and orchestra. Unlike many folks, I never saw the movie Titanic, nor did I catch the Lillihammer Winter Olympics. I first heard the voice of Sissel on The Chieftains album "Tears of Stone". I next heard a bit of her on a PBS video clip as I was outbound to China or San Francisco. The voice was unforgettable.

I saw this album in Borders in the States and picked it up knowing the quality of her voice. The beauty of the music just blew me away when I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to it. This recording is very well done with a mix of pop and classical that really showcases what this woman can do. I am serving the Lord in China currently, and the lyrics make think me a great deal of the woman over here that I have fallen in love with. She has listened to this also, and she was very much moved by it.

Perhaps she (Sissel) may consider recording something from J.S. Bach's works for the Church :-)

I bought this CD from Tower records simply because I could not wait to enjoy the elegant voice of Sissel. Yeah you may say I was crazy, I paid a higher price plus tax. But that was all worth it.
My personal favorite is the last one, Deborah's theme from "once upon in America", one of the best films about friendship and love. And all other songs are marvelous. I think Sissel's voice is warmer when compared with Sarah Brightman. Maybe true classic fans won't like her, but they never like pop-lized Sarah either. :P
Anyway, this is a must-have for fans of innocent voices. It is really my pleasure to listen to this CD while programming. :)
